ASDA has revealed that its proposed new store for Newark would provide up to 330 jobs for local people, of which approximately 100 would be full-time. If approved, ASDA's new 32,500 sq ft store at the Potterdyke site would boost the local economy and help Newark compete with nearby towns.

ASDA is recognised as one of the country's best employers. For three years running, it has been named one of the Sunday Times Best 10 Companies to work for in the UK's toughest survey to measure staff satisfaction. The new full and part-time jobs created at Newark will include a wide range of roles, with training opportunities available to all employees.

As a partner of the Government's Local Employment Partnership scheme, ASDA encourages long-term unemployed people back into the labour market. In Newark, ASDA would be aiming to establish a local employment partnership with Job Centre Plus. The retailer is also the biggest private sector employer of over 50s in the UK, currently employing around 2,300 colleagues over 65.

Tom McGarry, ASDA Property Communications Manager, said:

"ASDA already employs over 1000 colleagues in our Grantham and Lincoln stores - and we would like to bring over 300 jobs to the local people of Newark. We offer fair employment opportunities and excellent job benefits including discounts at ASDA for our employees, the option to join our share plan, a discretionary bonus scheme and access to discounted private medical cover and a pension scheme, with ASDA contributions. We hope to bring these benefits to Newark - along with our great value products".

ASDA is also keen to provide local people with greater choice, affordability and convenience. The proposed Newark store will provide local residents with:

* A large range of the popular 'George at ASDA' clothing collection
* An extensive food and drink offering
* Electrical products, music and video
* Locally sourced products
* Convenience, choice and value at hours that best serve the community

Tom McGarry continued: "We would be delighted to bring ASDA to Newark. Initial feedback from local residents suggests that they are keen to see the store here as soon as possible and particularly welcome the 'George at ASDA' clothing range.

"ASDA is dedicated to providing the public with a supermarket choice and the highest standard of customer service. We want to introduce a store that balances Newark's cultural heritage with the need for affordable, quality shopping facilities".

A planning application for the main Potterdyke scheme was submitted in October last year and a planning decision is expected in the spring. If planning permission is granted, the store could be open in 2011.

ASDA also strives to benefit the community further by launching local initiatives, including its commitment to sourcing produce from local suppliers. Its 'Local Food, Miles Better' programmes supports local suppliers and helps reduce carbon emissions.
